DIY: create free ringtones for iPhone 3G using iTunes

alt
It is very easy to create free ringtones for your iPhone 3G using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer. This tutorial shows how to perform step by step. It only works with songs that are DRM free. To create ringtones using DRM protected songs, you need first strip the DRM off and then follow the guide. This method has been tested and works with iTunes 7.7.1 and iPhone 2.0.1 firmware. Actually, my friend told me he had tested it with iTunes 8 and it worked smoothly as well, though there were several differences in making settings due to the update of iTunes.

Create free ringtones for your iPhone using only iTunes and songs you already have on your computer (This method only works with songs that are DRM free. To create ringtones using DRM protected songs please follow this guide to strip the DRM off first). This method has been tested and works with iTunes 7.7.1 and iPhone 2.0.1 firmware.

To create custom ringtones using only iTunes:

  • 1. Right click on the song you are going to make into a ringer and select "Get Info".

  • 2. Go to the options tab and go down to the "Start Time" and "Stop Time" check boxes. Check both boxes and input the time you want your ringer to start/stop. The ringer has to be 30 seconds or less. Click OK when you're done.

  • 3. Right click on your newly "clipped" song and select "Convert Selection to AAC". The song will be re-encoded using the start and stop times determined (If your menu item does not read "Convert Selection to AAC" and reads "Convert Slection to MP3" (or some other format) please go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing and change the "Import Using" drop down menu to "AAC Encoder").

  • TuneClone to convert DRM protected iTunes M4P to MP3, Create free ringtones for iPhone 3G
  • 4. After the song is done encoding navigate to your iTunes Music folder, locate your song, and drag it to your desktop. After the song is on your desktop go back to iTunes and delete the clipped version from you iTunes library (It won't delete it from your desktop, it will only remove it from iTunes).

  • 5. Go back the song on your desktop and right click on your song and chose "Properties". Go to the name and extension section and change the extension from .m4a to .m4r (or you can just change the extension right from your desktop).

  • 6. After the extension is changed simply double click on the file to add it to your iTunes library under the ringtones section. Sync your phone with iTunes and you're done!

  • Note: Remember to go back into iTunes and uncheck your custom start and stop times for the original version of your song.

10 things you don't know about NOKIA

10 things you don't know about NOKIA

1) The ringtone "Nokia tune" is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named "Gran Vals" by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named "Grande Valse" on Nokia phones but was changed to "Nokia Tune" around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the "Nokia Tune."

2) The world's first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone.

3) Nokia is currently the world's largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer.

4) The "Special" tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for "SMS". Similarly, the "Ascending" SMS tone is Morse code for "Connecting People," Nokia's slogan. The "Standard" SMS tone is Morse code for "M" (Message).

5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User's Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font.
6) In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia.

7) Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune's list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company).

8. Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)

9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because "aikon" is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia's own Symbian S60 SDK.

10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct.

Tips To Check A Second Hand Cell Phone!

Following are the Tips to thoroughly check a secondhand or used cell phone before buying,I have learned these from Hafeez Center and Hall Road Vendors

1. Check the accessories that comes with the phone, verify that which accessories comes with the new one and if any thing is missing ask the seller about it.
2. Check the original body of the phone(specially if its Nokia).
3. Check the seal of the warranty even if the cell's waranty expired.
4. If phone is in warranty match the IMEI number of the warranty card and the phone, usually printed on the back side of phone under the battery.
5. Check the incoming and outgoing voice with and without handsfree.
6. Check the volume of the rigtone speaker.
7. Check LCD contrast.
8. Always Make a real call from the phone and verify the incoming and outgoing voice.
9. Attach the charger and charge the phone for 5 mins
10. Thoroughly check the menu play with the phone, turn it On and OFF couple of times.
11. Remove the battery for couple of minutes and reinstall it again to verify the health of the battery.
12. Ask the seller why he wants to sell, is there any problem with the cell(Even if cell looks like a new one).
13. If a locallly used 1 or more than one year old cell phone looks like a brand new one ,check it more carefully, its may be painted.
14. To check wether the phone is painted or not, carefully examine the edges of screen ,the speaker and mic place you will defintly find some evidence of spray paint.one more thing if the surface of the phone is a little bit rough or grainy slightly scratch the phone's paint with your nail ,if its painted the pain will be removed.
15. To verify wether its repaired or not.

- Check the warranty seal.

- Examine the all Screws very carefully if a little bit paint is removed or all the screws are not alike then the set is opened.

- See the edges of the phone, the line between the upper and lower halves of the body. Press phone slightly if there is a little bit play between the upper and lower half then the set is may be repaired.

one more thing those vendors check ,i:e they blow into the mic of the phone I am not sure what they check ,if anyone else know then he is welcome to shed some light on it.

thats all I have on my mind right now, may be a few things more later.till then

Have a nice day

How to save a wet cellphone (First Aid)

Ever dropped your cell phone in the sink, or even worse the toilet? Did you ever leave it in your pocket and run it through the washer? It usually means you have to replace your phone, but sometimes if you're fast you can save the phone.

1. Remove the Battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it, electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it.

2. Dry your Phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as you can to prevent it from getting into the phone. Use a towel or a paper towel to remove as much of the water as possible.

3. Soak in Alcohol. Alcohol is hygroscopic (attracts water), it will dissolve all the water in the phone, which will then pour out of the phone with the alcohol. Any remaining alcohol will evaporate. Alcohol will not harm your phone but may mess up glue (from stickers and the like). Use 95% alcohol, not the regular 70% rubbing type. Do it outside!. If you use alcohol, do not follow the rest of the advice here, instead leave your phone outside for a day or two to dry.

4. Allow the phone to dry. Since you do not want to ruin your phone or lose all the numbers in your phone book, you need to allow the phone to dry. Don't try putting the battery back on to see if it works as this would risk damaging the phone with a short circuit. Leaving your phone in a bowl of dry rice will help to expedite moisture evaporation.

5. Heat your Phone. Apply enough heat to your phone to cause the water to evaporate without waterlogging your digital screen. One of the best things you can do to save a cell phone is to set it on the back of your computer monitor or TV screen over the heat vents. This is usually the perfect amount of heat to fix your phone. The convection action of the heat vents will help carry away the moisture in your phone. Leave the phone on the heat for at least 2-3 days. Another option is to leave it overnight in the oven on warm (make sure to take off the battery first).

6. Test your Phone. After you have waited 3 days, make sure everything is clean and dry looking and re-attach the battery to the phone and see if it works. If your phone does not work repeat step 4. If it still won't work, try taking your cell phone to an authorized dealer. Sometimes they can fix it.

Tips :

* Don't put the battery on for at least 3 days or longer if your digital screen is foggy.

* Place a piece of satin finish scotch tape over your water damage sticker before you drop your cell phone in the water to prevent the water damage sticker from voiding your warranty. This sticker can usually be found under your battery. It's a small round white sticker, possibly with dots on it. If this sticker gets wet it changes color and your phone is marked for water damage.

* Remove the tape if you ever have to return your phone for repairs or warranty. (See the note in the 'Warnings' section about doing this!)

* The best way to dry out your phone is to place it in front of an air conditioner or air conditioning vent. Cold air won't damage your phone (hot air can warp or in extreme cases even melt plastic), and air from an air conditioner is dry, and so will evaporate water faster than you might think (which is why a car air conditioner will de-mist the windshield so effectively, even if the engine hasn't warmed up yet). Warm air from a reverse-cycle air conditioner works even better, of course. If you dry your phone in this way overnight it should be fine by the morning.

* Use a hairdryer set on warm; it won't melt your head so your phone should be safe.

* Use a food dehydrator.

* Use the oven on the warm setting (make sure to take out the battery)

Warnings :

* Don't heat the battery or it could leak acid. If you use an oven or hairdryer, make sure to remove the battery first.

* If you use alcohol make sure to do so outside, and do not apply heat in any form, not even the gentle heat of a monitor. Do not hook up the bettery till the alcohol smell dissipates.

* Do not apply heat to your phone other than mentioned above. You don't want to melt or burn your phone.
* Warranty fraud is naughty! If you dropped your phone in the can with your other 'droppings'--are you really going to send it in for a warranty tech to have to open? Yuck!

* FYI, Most modern phones have more than one liquid damage indicator on them, only one visible to you (and sales/technician agents), and chances are, if the sticker under the battery is triggered (or would be, with the scotch tape trick), then the odds are that the internal stickers you can't access are tripped as well. This will still result in you paying a voided-warranty fee in the long run, and it may be best to just learn from your mistake (and not make it more financially severe!).

* Even if all these steps are followed, minerals dissolved in the water can precipitate on solder and component pins, causing corrosion or shorting. Components pins are packed so closely together in a modern cell phone that even a small encrustation can create a short, rendering the phone inoperable.

For Nokia s60 1st and 2nd edition phones.

4. At the end of the file you will find your password.

For Nokia S60 3rd Phones, Nokia N-Series and Nokia E-Series

There is almost no way yet known to hack the memory card password in case of these types of phone but there is a way to do it some of the s60 3rd edition phones and almost all the E-series phones.

Mobile Internet: WML/WAP Tutorial Part 1 - Introduction

Introduction

WML (Wireless Markup Language) is the new web language for making sites on mobile phones. Over the past few months new WAP (Wireless Applications Protocol) phones have become extremely popular and many large websites have created special 'mobile' versions of their site. Many people predict that, over the next few years, WAP sites will become even morepopular and e-commerce over mobile phones will be widely available

Why Should I Use WML?

Although you might not have any plans immediately for creating a WAP version of your site, it is always a good idea to get involved in new technology. All you need to do is make a small site (even one page) which tells people a bit about your website. In the future you can develop the site further with things like e-mail and information for people to get directly off their phones. The main sites which will benefit from WAP are ones providing a service like e-mail, live sports scores or a calendar service etc. but there are many other uses. For example, a site giving music reviews could put their reviews on a WAP site. People could then read the reviews on their mobile phone while browsing through the CDs in a shop.

I Don't Have A WAP Phone!

To create a WAP site you don't need a WAP enabled phone. You can get a WAP simulator for a PC. This is a piece of software which will give you a WAP phone on your desktop. You can then type in the URLs of WAP sites and can view them on your PC. You can get a very good free WAP simulator from YourWAP.com

How Do WAP Sites Compare To Normal Ones?

WAP sites are not like standard web sites at all. As an example, you are looking at part of the Gowansnet web site. Here is a screenshot of the Gowansnet WAP site (http://gowansnet.waphosts.net/)

As you can see, sites written in WML are monochrome, very limited and there is very little screen space. Because of this you must be very careful when you are designing a WAP site as it is nothing like a web site.

What Now?

Just read on to learn how to create a WAP site using WML. It is a great advantage if you know HTML as WML is a lot like it (in fact WML is just a variant of XML, another web language).

Did You Know Your Cell Phone Could do This?!

I received a list of 5 things your cell phone can do from my dad of all people. (He is usually not a place I gather information on technology!) A few of these I knew about - like using your phone to unlock your car - but the battery saving feature and the free *411 calls were new to me.

Note: This list has been going around the Internet with incorrect information. I have updated it to include CORRECT information. Please comment if you think otherwise. Have a Nokia phone? Here is a list of tips just for you: Nokia Tips.

#1

Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112. (Note: Worldwide yes, in the US, just dial 911) This will work on a cell phone that is locked or does not have paid service. If you have an old phone you don’t use anymore, please donate it to a women’s shelter. They give them to battered women to use in emergencies.

#2

Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote key-less entry? This may come in handy someday. If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their cell phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock. Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you. Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can reach someone who has the other “remote” for your car, you can unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Note: I don’t think this will really work seeing that cell phones and key fobs use totally different transmission types. I don’t need it anyway since I can just call OnStar :-) Think otherwise? Comment and I’ll update if you can prove me wrong.

#3

Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your cell battery is very low. (Probably not hard to imagine.) To activate, press the keys *4720# (NOT #3370* as other reports state, this will increase call clarity at the expense of battery power!) and your cell will restart. This will not work on all types of cell phones. (jemmille.com Note: I have an LG Chocolate and this doesn’t work on mine.) This isn’t actually a power reserve it just places your phone in half-rate codec mode, which decreases sound quality, but does save lots of battery power.

#4

How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following digits on your phone:

*#06# digit code will appear on the screen (in some, but not all phones). This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. If your phone is stolen, call your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You can also just call them and have them disable your number until you find or get a new phone. This is a bit easier I think. (jemmille.com Note: Your serial number can ALWAYS be found under the battery on a sticker.)

#5

Free Directory Service for Cells
Cell phone companies charge $1.00 to $1.75 or more for 411 information calls. Most of us do not carry a telephone directory in our vehicle (but you should), which makes this situation even more of a problem. When you need to use the 411 information option, simply dial: (800) FREE 411, or (800) 373-3411 without incurring any charge at all. Program this into your cell phone now. (Note: You will still incur your usual per minute charges but the directory service is in fact free.)

This was updated with some information from here.

One last thing…If you do have an LG Chocolate and you got it right when they came out, then your phone doesn’t have the speakerphone option. Take it to any authorized Verizon store and they will update your firmware. You can do it yourself with a few tricks if you want to take the chance. Learn how here.
